Coal Mining and Exploration Licences

This is definitely something that many community groups, communities, political parties and individuals have been campaiging for for many years (in fact decades). However, there are significant obstacles in the way of achieving these goals of preventing new exploration licences from being renewed/issued. The issues around Gloucster at present (not the only case) are a good example of a community (with support from a number of community groups and at least one political party) campaigning strongly against new exploration licences in and around the township of Gloucster. These fights will continue, however the prevention of the issuing of new exploration licences is but one campaign that needs to be fought (and won) if we are to play our role in achieving a safe climate future. We need to achieve zero GHG emissions as soon as is possible as it is clear that atmospheric CO2 is already too high, and that the earth is already too hot to maintain the stable climate upon which civilisation has depended. Unfortunately, this means a transformation in our society away from coal (& all other forms of polluting fossil fuel based energy sources) for energy production as a very minimum. Therefore, we need to have no new coal mines, no new coal fired power stations and a plan to phase out existing power stations and replace with a mix of renewable energy sources within the next 10 years. Noone is suggesting that this is easy, just necesarry for our survival, and the survival of future generations of both humans and non-humans. Duncan

Coal Mining and Exploration Licences

Is there some way that we can stop Coal Mining Companies renewing and/ or getting more exploration licences, if the government really want lower emissions surely this is one way of getting it, by not issuing licences and opening new mines.
